The Commission Journey

From first word to finished piece

Every commission follows a carefully considered process — designed to ensure that the piece we create is exactly the piece you envisioned, made to the highest possible standard at every stage.

1
Stage One

The consultation

Everything begins with a conversation. We meet — in person at our Birmingham atelier, or privately by video — to understand your vision, the occasion, and the story you want the piece to carry. There is no brief too open, no idea too ambitious.

We'll discuss metals, patterns, gemstones, and the way you want to wear the piece. We listen far more than we talk at this stage.

Stage Two

Design & billet composition

Following the consultation, we present a design proposal — including the metal combination for your Mokume-gane billet, the pattern style we aim to achieve, and any gemstone selections. We work in close dialogue with you throughout this stage, refining until the design is exactly right.

Once confirmed, the billet is composed — each sheet of metal chosen and sequenced by hand, ready for fusion.

Stage Three

The making

This is where the piece is born. The billet is fused under heat and pressure, then worked — rolled, carved, and shaped — until the grain pattern reveals itself. The Mokume-gane is then formed into its final shape and gemstones are set entirely by hand.

At key milestones we share progress with you — photographs of the billet pattern as it emerges, the piece taking form. You are part of the making.

Stage Four

Hallmarking & finishing

Every Wabi Mokume piece is submitted to the Birmingham Assay Office for hallmarking — the official certification of the precious metal content. The piece is then finished, polished, and subjected to a final quality review before it leaves the atelier.

Investment

Honest, considered pricing

Our approach

Every commission is priced individually — the investment reflects the metals chosen, the complexity of the design, the gemstones selected, and the time the piece requires. We discuss investment openly and honestly during the consultation, with no surprises at any stage.

Starting point

Commissions typically begin at £2,500. Simple single-metal rings begin around this level. Multi-metal compositions, platinum pieces, and designs with significant gemstones will be priced accordingly. We work across a wide range of budgets and will always be candid about what is achievable within yours.

Payment

A deposit of 50% confirms your commission and covers materials. The remaining balance is due when your piece is complete and approved, before delivery. We accept bank transfer and all major credit cards.

Timescales

"From our first conversation to the moment your piece arrives — expect six to twelve weeks, depending on the piece."

This allows proper time for design dialogue, careful billet construction, and the Mokume-gane process itself — which cannot be rushed without compromising the result.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know

If your question isn't answered here, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

To a degree, yes. We can guide the pattern by choosing certain metal sequences and working techniques — favouring, for example, a tighter wood-grain pattern or a broader wave pattern. However, the exact result is always a collaboration between the metalsmith and the metal itself. This unpredictability is part of what makes Mokume-gane so extraordinary, and why no two pieces are ever identical.

Yes — we can incorporate heirloom metals into a Mokume-gane billet, and we regularly work with stones that clients bring to us. This is a wonderful way to give new life to inherited jewellery while creating something entirely new. We will always assess the suitability of the metals before confirming, as purity and condition are important for the fusion process.

Absolutely — rings are among our most commissioned pieces, and Mokume-gane wedding and engagement rings carry a particularly meaningful resonance. The layered metal pattern has long been associated with the joining of two things into one. We take great care with pieces made to mark such occasions and are experienced in managing timescales sensitively around planned proposals and wedding dates.

Please tell us your date at the very first point of contact — it's the first thing we need to know. We will be completely honest about whether the timeline is achievable. Mokume-gane cannot be safely rushed, and we would never compromise the quality of your piece to meet an impossible deadline.

We welcome visits to the atelier by appointment. There is something genuinely moving about seeing your piece mid-making — watching the pattern emerge from the billet, seeing the metal being worked by hand. We can arrange a visit at a suitable milestone in the making process.
